My pain levels were 10+ almost all day. When I say 10, I mean if I was bumped or jarred it would radiate through my bones and into my back and I would yell out loud. I could not bend or flex at the hips much at all and even bought one of those grabber sticks so I could pick up things when I dropped them. My wife calls me Mr. Glass jokingly (from that Bruce Willis movie)… Anyways it was about as bad as any pain I have ever experienced in my life.
So after getting through the day I would have to contend with nighttime and sleeping. This was something I didn’t look forward to because I can’t sleep flat on my back and on either side would hurt as well. So I would start out in our old bed, last about 2 hours, move to a recliner in the bedroom for another 2 hours, and then head downstairs to our sofa for a few more hours. All the while I was never really falling asleep and in constant hip and lower back pain. This lasted for about 2-3 years and I was so fatigued and tired on top of all of the pain. Luckily I work from home as a Software Engineer so I was able to keep my job since I could work in chairs and sofas as needed through the day and still get my job done. If I was in another line of work I would have probably had to go on disability, something I had never done before in my life.
One day while at the dentist (sounds funny but…) I was in the dentist chair for a cleaning. When he had me reclined back in a certain way the pressure came off of my lower back and hips and the pain level came down a bit. After that appointment I started to research adjustable beds. Months of research to be accurate, I didn’t want to spend a large amount of money on the adjustable bed and it not help. We have enough medical bills and if the bed wasn’t going to hold up I wasn’t going to spend the money.
After I had completed all of my research I settled on the Legett and Platt “New 2015 Split King-S-Cape Performance Model”. The main reason for choosing this model was during most of the research of other adjustable beds the name Legett and Platt would always seem to come up as the manufacture of their base in some way, or they would compare it to a Legett and Platt base (the base is the bottom of the bed, it replaces the box spring and does all of the movement).
I found this specific model on Amazon and did some price checking and this seemed to be the best deal for the money. I had to order two bases since we wanted a king sized bed. They come with their own remotes that will their “synced” side independently. So if I want to adjust I won’t disturb my wife and vice versa.
I can honestly tell you that after the first night of having this in place (we ordered two new twin mattresses as well) I was able to sleep solid for about 4 hours before I had to change position or make an adjustment. I still had the back pain during the day but this truly helped me get some rest at night and provide some relief.
I have had the bed for about three months now and I have no complaints. Nothing seems to be coming lose, everything works as it did on day one, and no glitch issues to report. I am not going to make a false claim and say it has cured my back pain because it has not. What it did do was allow me to get some actual deep sleep at night and that has improved my quality of life in a small but significant way.
I don’t normally write reviews but I thought that if there is someone else out there in a similar situation and they are looking for an honest review that might help them achieve some relief at night I had to take the time and do it.
Also, pay for the extra delivery charge to have these moved in where you want them. The bases are very heavy and you will need someone who knows how to move these if you are going upstairs with them as we did.
So how am I doing today? I am hanging in there. I have narrowed down the pain to my facet joints on my lower back with the help of a Pain Management Center. After two rounds of nerve numbing on each side and some response I had the nerve ablation completed and feel a little better. This is expected to last about 6 months – 2 years depending on the person.
Bottom line is to hang in there and seriously consider an adjustable bed for your back pain.
Good Luck!
